Unveiled in prototype form at the 1986 Birmingham International Motor Show, the 'S1' was a pivotal model for TVR. Indeed, demand for the fibreglass-bodied sports car was such that the Blackpool company's annual production doubled in twelve months. Despite, its styling being reminiscent of the late 1970s '3000', the 'S1' was a brand new design. Built around a tubular-steel spaceframe chassis equipped with all-round independent coil-sprung suspension (double-wishbone front / trailing-arm rear), disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering, it boasted a dry weight of just 940kg. Enjoying class leading performance, the roadster was powered by a reworked version of Ford's 'Cologne' V6 engine mated to five-speed manual transmission. Launched in 1989, the 'S2' proved faster still. Benefiting from more sophisticated Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and revised exhaust manifolds, its longer-stroke 2.9 litre unit boasted some 168bhp and 172lbft of torque. In combination with a quoted 170.2bhp per ton power to weight ratio, this extra grunt reputedly translated into a 140mph top speed and 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds.
Finished in Navy Blue with cream leather upholstery (piped in blue), this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (bodywork, paintwork) condition. Reportedly treated to some £1,800 worth of recent fettling by a marque specialist that included "a new radiator, stainless exhaust, shock absorbers and rear brake shoes / cylinders", 'H331 FLA' is further understood to benefit from a boot-mounted CD 6-disc multi-changer. Said to drive "extremely well" and to have covered some 63,420 miles from new (a figure apparently substantiated by "many old receipts / history"), it rides on alloy wheels. Making way for another TVR, this handsome S2 is offered for sale with history file and MOT certificate valid until September 3rd 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
