Introduced to the UK in November 1958, Volvo's highly successful 120-series 'Amazon' was built around a steel-fabricated monocoque. Equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a Panhard rod located rear axle, it quickly acquired a reputation for toughness, longevity and reliability. Powered by a choice of torquey four-cylinder engines, the 'Amazon' (be it in four-door 120-series or two-door 130-series guise) proved a formidable competitor on both rally stages and racetracks alike. In 1963, Volvo 122S cars won the European Rally Championship, came second in the European Touring Car Championship and took first in class at the 6-hour and 12-hour Nurburgring endurance races (an 'Amazon' would also go on to win the 1965 RAC European Touring Car Championship). Available from August 1968 onwards, the 1986cc B20 powerplant in both single-carburettor 'A' (90bhp) and twin-carburettor 'B' (118bhp) specifications brought a welcome boost in performance especially if combined with the lighter, two-door bodyshell.
Finished in red with red vinyl upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in very good condition with regard to its B20B twin-carb engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reported to have had "one lady owner", it is also "believed to have been serviced by a family friend from new". A late model Amazon benefiting from the "larger servo" and disc / drum brakes, it is said to "drive superbly with no obvious faults". Reputed but not warranted to have covered 27,654 miles in the last thirty-five years, this "ideal classic rally car" (though, some might view that as sacrilege) is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 28th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until October 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
