The stunning-looking XK120 Roadster caused a sensation when it was launched at the London Motor Show of 1948. Capable of 120mph and more, it immediately assumed the mantle of the world's fastest production car. The equally elegant Fixed Head Coupe version followed in 1951 with the Drophead Coupe completing the range in 1953. The key to the car's superb performance was its all new, alloy-headed DOHC 3.4-litre, straight-six engine. In standard form the output was 160bhp, but in SE (Special Equipment) guise (which included firmer suspension and a twin exhaust) this rose to 180bhp. In testing a Fixed Head SE XK120 in 1952, Autocar achieved a 0-60mph time of 9.9 seconds. The 120's suspension was independent by wishbones and torsion bars at the front and by live axle mounted on semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear. Steering was by recirculating ball and braking courtesy of Lockheed hydraulic drums all round.
This splendid right-hand drive, 'home market' XK120 Drophead Coupe was supplied new to the dealer Attwoods during January 1954 - at that stage it was finished in Pastel Blue teamed with French Grey interior trim. Now well known in northern XK circles, it was purchased by the vendor from an established XK enthusiast in 2005. Apparently restored circa 1992, it has benefited from a new hood by Nick Turley within the last seven years. The vendor has mainly used it for touring and it is set up for that purpose with: stainless steel fuel tank, dynalternator, hi-torque starter, spin off oil filter, Kenlowe fan, 321 ignition, alloy header tank, front disc brakes, high intensity rear light, indicators and fitted luggage. The vendor currently describes the bodywork as "excellent for the year" the Black paintwork as "excellent save for minor blisters on the front wing/bonnet", and the maroon leather interior trim, six-cylinder engine and standard four-speed Moss gearbox as "excellent". The Jaguar's MOT is valid until May 9th 2013.
