Lot details Registration No: LWX 988 cc: 500 MOT Expiry Date: None
Following Allan Jeffries, Bob Manns, Len Baylis, Jimmy Alves and Alex Scobie's team victory in the 1948 International Six Days Trial aboard their 500cc off-roaders, entrant Triumph took the decision to release a commemorative production version the following year. Based on a shortened Speed Twin rigid frame fitted with a twin-cylinder, 25hp unit that had its origins in a World War Two generator design, the Trophy TR5 gave excellent performance both on and off the road. Equipped with aluminium heads and barrels, the engine's low weight and ample torque were no doubt contributory factors in the Trophy's eventual four ISDT wins. Shorn of its chrome-plated tank in 1950 as part of Ed Turner's rationalisation drive, the Trophy was upgraded the next season with splayed port cylinder heads and tight finned cylinder barrels. An iconic machine with a reputation for good handling and strong braking, James Dean is reputed to have owned a Trophy (apparently he considered it a suitably 'proper' bike with which to wind up the Thunderbird mounted Marlon Brando).
Part of a private museum collection, this particular example has been in storage for some time and will therefore require recommissioning prior to usage. Sold strictly as seen, it is offered without any paperwork.
