Lot details Registration No: UMG 50 Chassis No: Y3443 Mot Expiry: None
Introduced in 1947, the Y type saloon was an important car for MG. Boasting an all new welded box-section chassis (later adapted for use on the marque's TD / TF sportscars) its sophisticated coil-and-wishbone independent front suspension was the work of Sir Alec Issigonis and MG draughtsman Jack Daniels. Equipped with rack and pinion steering, a four-speed manual gearbox and hydraulic drum brakes as standard, it was powered by the same 1250cc XPAG four-cylinder engine as its TC Midget sports car sibling. Said to develop some 46bhp and 58.5lbft of torque, the single SU carburettor fed unit reputedly endowed the model with a 71mph top speed. Styled by Gerald Palmer, the Y type's elegant lines and well finished interior helped put it a cut above its mainstream rivals.
Finished in yellow over black with beige part leather upholstery, this particular example was apparently in running order when the vendor acquired it in Hampshire during 1992. Reportedly stored in a dry barn ever since, it is described by him as having a "good chassis, sound bodywork, faded paintwork, worn interior trim and reasonable wheels / tyres". Stating that its engine "turns freely" but that neither the electrical equipment nor gearbox have been tested, he further notes that the MG's "UMG 50 registration is transferable". Though, this is of course on the proviso that the car has been suitably MOT tested, taxed and insured.
