Gravetti was among the first to market a self-build Cobra look-a-like. Launched in late 1985 and backed by an excellent marketing campaign, the company attracted a slew of orders on the basis that it would provide customers with a `lock, stock and barrel' kit (i.e. they would not have to worry about acquiring a donor vehicle or parts). A GRP body from Automotive Developments was supplied complete with a ladder-frame chassis and Jaguar suspension components for assembly. Engine, gearbox, switchgear, wiring harness, trim and chrome were all included and the upsurge of interest stemming from this unique angle helped kick-start the Cobra look-a-like phenomenon. The company launched publicly in 1986, and for a while it looked as though all would fall before it. But after around 50 kits had been supplied, some adverse press comment and various teething problems affected the order books, and by 1987 it was all over. A final fling occurred for the concept when an investment company tried to revive it, but this last gasp attempt proved short-lived.
This Gravetti was registered as a GE Cars product in 1990, so seemingly took its original builder around three years to complete. The car is fitted with a 351ci (5.7litre) Cleveland Ford V8 and has the benefit of a five-speed manual gearbox. Finished in red with black upholstery, the two-seater is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, bodywork and paintwork (though, he rates the interior trim as "average" and notes that "the oil temperature gauge does not work"). Chrome Weiand valve covers are fitted to the V8 and the clutch master cylinder and two tyres are said to have been recently replaced. The boot apparently houses copious spare parts. A space-saver spare wheel is included, though the tyre on that rim is recommended to be changed. The tax disc expires at the end of February 2010, with MoT running until March next year. With Cobra replicas a very real part of the classic car scene, owning this `fake snake' would reward with stylish motoring into 2010, and the ability to take part in any number of shows, road runs and events.
