The Alfetta Saloon was launched in 1972 and the 2-door fastback Coupe based on the same mechanicals followed two years later. While the Saloon was designed in-house, the pretty GTV Coupe was penned by the seemingly immortal Giorgetto Giugiaro. It featured a front-mounted engine driving the rear wheels but was notable for having the clutch and gearbox at the back, integral with the differential. Suspension was independent by torsion bars and wishbones at the front and coil springs, De Dion axle, trailing arms and transverse Watts linkage at the rear. Braking was by discs front and rear, and steering by rack and pinion. Initially the GTV was only available with a 1779cc version of Alfa's creamy DOHC in-line four cylinder engine, but two more engine options were added to the line-up in 1976 - 1570cc and 1962cc. In 1981, the model range was treated to a facelift. Grey plastic bumpers and all matt-black trim replaced bright stainless steel, and the smaller capacity engines were both dropped, along with the Alfetta name. Later the same year a new top of the range GTV was introduced, powered by the SOHC 2.5-litre V6 previously found in the Alfa 6 Saloon. Fitted with Bosch fuel injection, the new engine required a distinctive bonnet bulge. Competition versions of these great cars swept the board in European Touring Car races, winning the championship an unprecedented four years in succession.
The right-hand drive GTV 2.5 on sale is finished in Metallic Grey with Beige velour interior. It was first registered in September 1982 and has now had four keepers. Critically, it was treated to a Hoek International Cryla-Guard rust proof system when new and appears to still have its original paintwork. The vendor regards the Alfa as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is a non runner and has recently suffered engine damage when its cam belt slipped. It is being sold strictly as seen and is now offered without reserve.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
