Ferrari made just 122 Daytona Spyders (of which a mere 7 were RHD) versus 1,284 Berlinettas. The recent sale in August 2014 of a Spyder for $2,640,000 (c.£1,582,000) not only underlines the model's desirability but also explains why numerous Berlinettas were converted by the likes of E.G. Autokraft (UK), Auto Sport (Italy), Michael Sheehan's European Auto Restoration (USA) and the Richard Straman Company (USA). Emilio Garcia - the E.G. of E.G. Autokraft (and later PKA/Arrow) - went further than his contemporaries by creating the most dimensionally accurate Daytona Spyder Evocations ever made. Moulded from one of his reconfigured Berlinettas and underpinned by a bespoke tubular chassis, the resultant two-seaters wore composite bodywork courtesy of Peter Jacobs (who clothed the Ford RS200 rally cars). Garcia is believed to have been responsible for circa 80 Daytona Spyder Evocations in total. Commissioned by Carl Patrick Nicholson (hence the `CPN 1K' numberplate), this particular example retains the identity and 5.3-litre V12 of its Jaguar XJ12 S1 donor. Reconditioned by the factory at a cost of £3,800 (c.1990), the aforementioned powerplant was allied to a brand new Borg Warner automatic gearbox. Reportedly zeroed after 1,500 debugging miles, the Spyder's odometer showed 4,113 miles when the car passed its last MOT test on 12th August 2014 with no advisories. Entering the current ownership during late November 2013, `CPN 1K' was somewhat tired. As well as having attention paid to its indicators, pop-up headlamps, instruments, door/window rubbers and chromework, the two-seater was treated to a reconditioned power steering rack, engine/gearbox oil changes, new rear shock absorbers and overhauled Stromberg carburettors by a Jaguar specialist. Further benefiting from a new: battery, Sony CD/Radio, radiator, double-lined mohair hood/hood cover, distributor, spark plugs, sun visors and wing mirrors, this stunning Daytona Spyder Evocation performed notably well during a recent passenger ride and sports a Nardi steering wheel as well as a sumptuous Connolly/Wilton-trimmed interior that would apparently cost some £8,000 to replicate.
