The sleek, Paul Bracq-penned, four-seater 6 Series Coupe was introduced in 1976 as a replacement for the aging CS and CSL models. Codenamed E24, the newcomer borrowed heavily from the contemporary E12 and E28 5 Series Saloons and was of unitary, all-steel construction. At launch, the range comprised two models - the 630CS and 633CSi; the bodies for which were manufactured by Karmann prior to production being taken in-house. Suspension was fully independent by semi-trailing arms and coil springs, braking by ventilated discs all round and steering by a ZF worm and roller system. The more powerful 635CSi swelled the line-up in 1978. It was equipped with a SOHC 3453cc straight six engine, and standard equipment included a five-speed manual gearbox and boot lid-mounted spoiler. A year later the carburetted 630CS was replaced by the 628CSi, which was powered by the fuel injected, 2788 cc engine proven in BMW's popular 528i Saloon. With 181bhp and 173lbft of torque on tap, this big Beemer was capable of swift acceleration and a reputed top speed of around 135 mph. In 1982 the model enjoyed a mild facelift, with improved interior and slightly modified exterior. Coincidentally, the range-topping 635CSi received a new engine of smaller bore and longer stroke, resulting in a capacity of 3430cc. This was mated to either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. Production of the 6 Series ceased in 1989 after some 86,216 examples had been produced. The model was effectively succeeded by the dearer, more complex 8 Series, though BMW had originally intended to market the 6 and 8 Series cars alongside each other.
There is little history with the tidy looking 628CSi being sold. What we can say is that it is a right-hand drive example with four-speed automatic transmission that was manufactured in 1986, and is finished in White and trimmed in Blue cloth. It reportedly comes complete with a full set of MOTs and selection of service/repair invoices. The vendor describes the coachwork, paintwork, engine, transmission and interior as "good" and the smart Bavarian express is MOT'd into June 2011 and taxed until the end of December this year.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
