Lot details
Registration No: HC 7222
Chassis No: 117
Mot Expiry: April 2007

An ingenious concept, HFS Morgan built his first Three-Wheeler in 1909. Based around a tubular steel frame, its low centre of gravity and advanced 'sliding pillar' independent front suspension endowed it with excellent roadholding. Progressively developed, the single rear-wheel-driven platform played host to a variety of JAP, Matchless, Blackburne, Anzani and Ford powerplants over the years (though, the prototype used a Peugeot unit). Fearsome competition cars, Morgan Three Wheelers driven by the likes of HFS himself, Clive Lones and Harold Beart acquitted themselves well on race circuits and trial stages alike (Mrs Gwenda Stewart recorded 115.66mph during a record run at Montlhery in 1930). An evolution of the JAP powered Aero model, the Super Sports appeared in 1927. Benefiting from a tuned engine and revised bodywork, it seduced many a sporting motorist. Boasting an extra forward gear, the new three-speed R-type gearbox was phased in during 1932. Designed to complement the recently introduced water-cooled LTOWZ 60-degree OHV V-twin 1100cc JAP engine it made for a smoother, more refined drivetrain. Revamped for 1933, the Three Wheeler range gained a standardised chassis and rerouted exhausts, while the Beetle Back remained the bodystyle of choice.
Finished in dark blue with plum upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (LTOWZ engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis) or "concours" (interior trim, paintwork, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. The subject of an extensive restoration by its previous keeper, the Super Sports is said to be "Fun with a capital F" and to "go like a bomb". Part of a large collection for the last few years, it is only up for sale because the owner reportedly has "too many cars" and "not enough elbow grease". Arguably one of the most thrilling pre-WW2 driving experiences around, Morgan Three-Wheelers continue to inspire a devoted following and enjoy the support of their own dedicated club. Considered by its present custodian to be "one of the very best around - a real crowd puller", HC 7222 is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2007.
