Lot details
Registration No: XE 5461
Chassis No: 247830
Mot Expiry: Feb 2005

The Angus family built horse-drawn coaches in Newcastle upon Tyne from the second half of the 18th century. Sanderson, an apprentice, became a partner and added his name to the firm. A Carlisle branch produced a few Aster-powered Sanderson-Aster automobiles 1905-1907, while some bodies were made for Armstrong-Whitworth and at least one Rolls. The first complete cars of their own appeared from the end of 1918 with 2265cc four-cylinder engines supplied by London bus motor manufacturer Tylor. Gearboxes, axles, steering gear and radiators came from Wrigley of Birmingham, chassis from Mechins of Glasgow. Bodies were totally in-house with wood sourced from the family's forests.
This Angus-Sanderson was first registered on the first of January 1921 and will therefore have been made at Sir William Angus's Sanderson and Company concern at Birtley in County Durham prior to the marque's relocation under new Angus-Sanderson (1921) limited ownership during 1921 to new workshops in Hendon, Middlesex. Production ceased in 1927 by when 3000 cars had been made, though only around half a dozen are thought to have survived.
The 14hp open tourer with four-doors providing accommodation for four is finished in red and has black hide interior. The 14hp four is of 2306cc capacity (the capacity having been increased from May 1919) and the manual box has three forward gears.
The history file, which may be inspected at our documents office during viewing and on sale day at Buxton, will contain an original brown logbook, invoices for work carried, correspondence and tax discs from the 1930s. The current MOT is valid until next February.
