As the 1960's progressed Kawasaki were faced with a dilemma, machines such as the Avenger and Samurai two stroke twins were securing a reputation for performance both for them and, by extension the company coupled to technical innovation, particularly in the two stroke field. However the range leading W series twins, although handsome, quick and reliable were hardly at the cutting edge of motorcycle design, clearly being influenced by the pre unit A series BSA twins. The answer to the dilemma was announced during September 1968. Typed the 500 SS, H1 or Mach III the new machine was powered by a two stroke three cylinder engine with automatic oil injection and a five speed gearbox producing a claimed 60 bhp. The new model was followed in 1971 by three similar machines of different capacities headed by the mighty 750 H2, or Mach IV. At the other end of the capacity spectrum was the Mach I and Mach II of 250cc and 350cc, also known as the S1 and S2 respectively. The two smaller machines followed the same general format established by the Mach III on a smaller scale sharing a common bottom end and bore of 52.3mm and delivered their performance in a similar, exciting manner making the S1 in particular, popular with younger British riders. The styling reflected that of the larger models, although a front drum brake was employed. 1973 witnessed the introduction of the S3 400 as a replacement for the 350cc S2 or Mach II and for 1976 the model designation for the triples changed to KH with the 250 S1 becoming the KH250.

The example offered has been restored to a good standard throughout and runs very nicely. It is fitted with a slightly later front mudguard but is otherwise believed to be correct in all major respects. A Swansea V5C and a wiring diagram accompany the machine.
