Like all Jaguars and SS-Jaguars produced from 1935 until the early 1970s, the new compact series of saloons, first seen in 1955, were personally styled by company founder Sir William Lyons. At that time, these were the very first Jaguars to use an all-steel unit-construction bodyshell: early cars used a short-stroke 2483cc XK engine, but in future years the larger 3442cc and 3781cc derivatives of this famous power unit were also adopted. More compact than previous Jaguars, this type of car, and all its derivatives, would have a long and much-respected life. The original style was produced for four years, then from 1959 a considerably re-styled derivative called the Mark 2, with much more glass area, a wider rear track, and even more elegant lines, took over, and became Jaguar's best-selling range. This range was sold only in four-door saloon car form and (depending on the size of engine chosen), was available with four-speed manual transmission, manual plus overdrive, or with Borg Warner automatic transmissions. Four-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment. All cars had leather-covered seats, with wood veneer on the fascia and door cappings. The line-up, eventually encompassed 2.4, 3.4 and 3.8-litre types, was in production until the end of the 1960s, and was so successful that it was eventually restyled to become the S-Type in 1963, and the 420 model in 1966. Because of its high-performance image, the 3.8 Mk 2 eventually became the most successful of all these sub-types, for with 220bhp it could reach speeds of 125mph. 30,141 3.8s were built in eight years.

Although this 1964 car, complete with manual plus overdrive transmission, was originally delivered to a British customer, it was exported to Rhodesia in the 1960s. Purchased there by the vendor some years later and taken to South Africa in 1990, the Jaguar is since understood to have benefited from a full bare metal respray and derusting not to mention and engine overhaul. Repatriated to the UK for the purposes of sale, it has been properly imported with the relevant duties paid. Riding on steel wheels, it is hoped but not guaranteed that this appealing Mark 2 will possess a fresh MOT certificate by the time of auction.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle does not have an MOT.
