Matchless was founded in 1899 by the Collier family in Plumstead, South London. Brothers Charlie and Harry Collier were leading pioneer bike racers; Charlie riding a Matchless to victory in the single-cylinder event at the first ever Isle of Man TT race in 1907, Harry winning two years later.
Associated Motor Cycles - the parent company of both AJS and Matchless - introduced the AMC answer to the Triumph twin in 1949. The Matchless G9 Super Clubman and AJS Model 20 Twin were almost identical, though the G9 sported megaphone silencers, different gearing and comfortable dual seat. Despite some vibration, the 500cc G9 proved to be very reliable and capable of high mileages.
We understand that this Matchless was last restored some fifteen years ago; the petrol tank chromed and painted red, the frame in black as well as the wheels all being to original specification, and the seat renewed. The 24,000 miles displayed on the odometer when entered is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total for this bike from new.
