For much of its long history, Moto Guzzi was Italy's largest manufacturer of motorcycles. Born out of a partnership between WW1 Air Corps members Carlo Guzzi and Giorgio Parodi, the firm's first bike was the Guzzi-designed 500cc 4-stroke with distinctive horizontally-mounted single cylinder. The Northern Italian marque really took off, however, thanks to Guzzis achieving considerable racing successes. It was in 1952, the year when the Motor Guzzi being auctioned here was built, that Fergus Anderson rode his factory entered Falcone to a 250cc Lightweight TT victory in the Isle of Man. Whilst a Guzzi V8 clocked 178mph during the 1957 Belgian GP.
The collector owner of this Falcon Tourer - a 500cc model in the traditional hue for Guzzi bright red - tells us that the attractive machine first came to these shores in approximately 1980. We understand from the entrant that the eleven miles displayed on the odometer is the genuine total mileage since the classic Italian was in receipt of a full restoration. As with the sister Falcon Sports 500 also being auctioned here today, this horizontal single-cylinder machine has also been hardly ridden since refurbishment. The high standard of preservation has been ensured, thanks to the bike having been on display at the Lakeland Motor Museum. Current cosmetic and mechanical condition of cycle parts as well as both engine and transmission are described by the vendor as being good.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
