1991 Teal Type 35 Evocation

Lot details
Registration No: YFF 571
Chassis No: ME2SKD-128144M
Mot Expiry: July 2009

At the top of many a wish list, the Type 35 is arguably the most significant Bugatti ever made. A bewitching blend of artistry and engineering that has entranced generations of enthusiasts since its 1924 French GP debut, the model has also inspired various imitations including those manufactured by Teal (Thistledown Engineering Automotive Limited) from the mid-1980s onwards. More of a homage than an exacting recreation, the Teal 'Type 35' was available in kit or factory-built guises. Clothing mass-produced running gear beneath its convincing boat-tailed silhouette; it gave customers a chance to turn their fantasies into (partial) reality.

Finished in yellow with black leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (1700cc SOHC engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment), "very good" (interior trim, wheels / tyres), "smart" (paintwork) or "excellent" (bodywork) condition. Reputedly built by an aircraft engineer who was also a skilled metal worker, 'YFF 571' is the most convincing aluminium-bodied Teal that we have yet encountered. Wonderfully detailed, the two-seater sports numerous extra louvers and scoops not to mention myriad wire-locked nuts and a 'riveted' spine to its tail. While, further nice touches include a side-mounted spare wheel, 'engine turned' bulkhead / dashboard, wood-rimmed steering wheel, external handbrake and Brooklands aero screens. Proudly displaying a Bugatti Owners' Club badge and 1992 Mille Miglia sticker the 'Type 35' rides on silver-painted 18-inch wire wheels. Said to be "great fun to drive with a convincingly Vintage feel", its front disc brakes and Kenlowe fan are nonetheless welcome concessions to modernity. Worthy of close inspection, 'YFF 571' is offered for sale with touring spares, aluminium hardtop and MOT certificate valid until July 2009.
