Introduced at the September 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 420SEC was a welcome addition to Mercedes-Benz's existing C126 coupe range. Based around the same two-door monocoque bodyshell as its 500SEC and 560SEC siblings, it was equipped with all-round independent suspension (coil-and wishbone front / semi-trailing arm rear) four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted steering. Allied to four-speed automatic transmission as standard, its new 4196cc SOHC V8 engine was credited with 231bhp and 240lbft of torque. Making the most of its 0.34 drag coefficient, the luxury express was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds and 138mph. By far the rarest C126 variant, just 3,680 420SECs are thought to have been made between 1986 and 1991.
Finished in white with blue velour upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Benefiting from a generous specification that includes heated seats, electric windows, cruise control and a sunroof etc, it is said to have covered 94,000 miles from new. Riding on alloy wheels, 'G769 TAG' is offered for sale with a "full service history" and MOT certificate valid until September 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
