Commissioned and designed by Ford as a European equivalent to the iconic Mustang, the Capri was launched in 1969. An attractive four-seater with good handling and respectable performance, its reputation was enhanced by the repeated successes of competition variants in the contemporary European Touring Car Championship. Although, stylistically evolved over three 'Marks', the handsome two-door coupe remained predominantly faithful to the same basic mechanical recipe throughout its eighteen-year production life. Built around a monocoque bodyshell featuring MacPherson strut front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering, it was powered by everything from an anaemic 1.3 litre four-pot to a homologation special 3.1 litre V6 engine. Introduced in March 1978, the MKIII Capri was aerodynamically superior to its predecessors. Boasting a restyled front end complete with quad headlights, an elongated bonnet lip and louvered grille, it also carried revised rear lights and new side mouldings.
Finished in blue with contrasting white stripes, this particular MKIII example is said to have been extensively modified for use as a racecraft teaching and practice car. Apparently one of several uprated Capris commissioned by historic motor racing ace Willie Green, its impressive specification includes a full roll cage, bag tank, Salisbury limited-slip differential, race seats / harnesses and all-round disc brakes (with four-pot callipers upfront). Powered by a Ford Scorpio 2.9 litre 24-valve Cosworth V6 engine allied to a Ford Sierra Cosworth five-speed manual gearbox, performance is understood to be a strong point (the Blue Oval claiming approximately 195bhp and 203lbft for the reworked Cosworth V6 when new). Used as a trackday car in the current ownership but a seemingly sound basis for more serious forms of motorsport, this road legal Capri is offered for sale with a spare set of wheels and MOT certificate valid until February 2009.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
