Triumph's super sport 500cc twin was named in celebration of the factory's success at the 1966 Daytona meeting when a 500cc Triumph twin based on the existing Tiger 100 secured victory. The model featured a twin carburettor head, higher compression pistons and a "Bonneville" profile camshaft that endowed it with performance approaching that delivered by its 650cc cousins. When the "Motor Cycle" tested an example in October 1968 they stated that "the Daytona can put out averages on give-and-take roads that are up with the best six-fifties" and saw a highest one way speed of 107 mph when the machine was put through the timing lights at MIRA. The machines handling was found to be "light and sensitive, steering was reassuringly positive" and that "both brakes performed well". The riding position and saddle were both found to be comfortable over long distances and the lighting was capable of allowing the rider to maintain his daytime pace after lighting up time.
The example offered dates from 1971 and consequently displays developments that added to the Daytona's usability without detracting from the machines performance. The 8 inch single leading shoe front brake commented on in the test had been replaced by the excellent twin leading shoe unit fitted from 1969. Indicators had been added to the machines standard equipment at the start of the seventies enhancing safety.
Described by the vendor as being in excellent original condition with only 10,471 miles on the odometer, it retains the warning sticker regarding the reset for the trip on the speedometer. It was recently imported from the United States and is offered Vat and Duty paid in the UK.
