During 1949 Velocette introduced a machine that sought to appeal to the widest possible market, the LE. The new model featured a horizontally opposed, side valve, liquid cooled engine with shaft final drive incorporated into the swinging arm. The new model displaced 149cc although a 192cc was offered from 1951. A monocoque frame with integrated leg-shields and foot-boards was employed. The new model was extremely quiet in use and quickly found favour with police forces around the UK as a beat patrol vehicle, however it did not achieve the popularity hoped for with private users. Velocette as a company were unable to compromise in respect of the design and engineering of product, consequently the LE was at a disadvantage when compared to rivals such as the Vespa. Although blessed with excellent handling and a refined powertrain it was expensive and lacked the style of some of its rivals, resulting in steady sales to enthusiasts who appreciated its virtues rather than mass sales to consumers envisaged when it was introduced. In a belated attempt to address this Velocette introduced the striking fibreglass bodied Vogue during 1963 fitted with the 192cc engine.
Included in this lot are a late 1970 LE MkIII requiring restoration, finished in grey and light blue and accompanied by a photocopy of an old style V5 log book, a 1965 Vogue with an old style Swansea V5 for restoration and various parts of a second LE.
