During the mid eighties, the large capacity two stroke made a final, brief, but glorious return to the roads in the form of three "race replicas" released by Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda. The RD500 and RG500 both used four cylinder power plants whilst the Honda utilised a vee three cylinder.
Introduced in 1985 the NS400R was built using the same philosophy that had proved so successful with the works grand prix bikes. The wide angle (112 degrees) vee three engine was mounted longitudinally in the alloy frame with one cylinder facing forwards and two "on top". This configuration enabled the machine to be both narrower and shorter than the rival fours and although the model was less powerful due to its smaller capacity, the deficit was negated to a large extent on the road by the machines better dynamics and lighter weight. Three carburettors nestled in the vee and were complimented by two ATAC exhaust chambers that began to close at 6,500 rpm and were shut by 7,200 rpm. Road tests of the day indicated that the NS400R was producing usable power at 5,000rpm, with the engine starting to come on "pipe" at 6,500 followed by a significant step at 7,200rpm with maximum power (52bhp) being delivered at 9,500 rpm. The machines handling and braking were praised and the overall quality of the finish and fittings was to Honda's usual excellent standard. With time the Honda was to prove to be the most reliable of the three machines and in the twenty five years since its release has achieved a cult status.
This example, finished in the desirable Rothmans livery is described as being in original condition having had only two owners from new and covered, according to the odometer only 32,464 kilometres. It is offered with German documents.

PLEASE NOTE: The side stand on this motorcycle is spring-loaded. Please take care when moving the machine.
