Mercedes-Benz began production of their W108/109-series saloons in 1966 and before long they were rightfully being regarded as among the most finely engineered cars that money could buy. Launched in 1972, the W116-series replaced the W109-series and became the first Mercedes-Benz to be known as the S-Class. From that day to this the term S-Class has become synonymous with quality and innovation.
This particular S-Class is one of the last examples of its type, rolling out of the Sindelfingen plant in 1979. It would appear that the car made its way to the UK almost immediately for use by its German owner who had a second home in London, and was issued with a British registration mark in March 1980. By 1995 it had reputedly covered a mere 10,000 kilometers.
At this point we're told it was acquired by an elderly gentleman who kept it for two years before passing it on to the vendor who claims to have stored the car professionally since then. Apparently the original spare tyre has never been used. The odometer currently shows some 61,330 kilometers (36,800 miles) and the car is described by the vendor as being in "very good overall" condition. The MOT is valid until July 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
