1975 Ford Escort RS 1600

Lot details
Registration No: JGC 34N
Chassis No: ND00143
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

The late, great Roger Clark's favourite rally Escort was 'LVX 942J', nicknamed 'Esso Blue' after its livery, with which he won the 1972 RAC Rally. This RS1600 is understood to be a faithful recreation, built in the mid '90s for a lucky owner who had once been in possession of the real thing, but carries modern safety gear to enable it to run in current historic rallies. It was last used on the Bulldog and Roger Albert Clark rallies in 2004, and before that finished third overall and won class C4 on the 2000 British Historic Rally Championship. Its specification includes numerous cherry-picked goodies and is built into a works spec, strengthened, seam welded and skidded bodyshell with chassis-mounted Dural sumpgaurd and bolt-in Safety Devices rollcage.

The engine is reportedly a John Wilcox-built 1973cc BDA, dry sumped unit, with large oil cooler and remote filter, fed by twin Weber DCOE 48s carburetors from a bag tank. The gearbox is a Brian Wildman five-speed ZF with three-paddle twin-plate clutch in an alloy bellhousing, and the rear axle is a wide Atlas full-floating twin taper unit, with 5.1 final drive and ZF LSD, Dural axle brace, diff guard, located by four short links and a Panhard rod (the mounts can be used for a Watt linkage instead). Up front there are adjustable Bilstein struts with 190lb springs, 260-60 forest inserts and roller-bearing top mounts. Alloy hubs mount disc brakes all round with four-pot calipers at the front and twin calipers at the rear, one pair for the hydraulic handbrake.

Electrical equipment includes a fused and relayed works-style wiring loom and 24v starting, from twin Varta heavy-duty 12 volt batteries; Cibie Biode headlamps, four PIAA spotlamps on quick-release alloy brackets, Lumenition ignition, rev limiter and twin coils. Inside, there are Cobra lightweight seats, new Willans 3in four-point belts, and a plumbed in, mechanically-operated AFF fire extinguisher system. On the twin-cowl dash under the heated windscreen are a front-wheel-driven Halda Twinmaster, a Coralba trip meter with switchable twin sensors, Brantz LED timer and Stack rev counter. Finishing touches are a Peltor intercom, helmet net and tool roll fastened to the rear bulkhead.

It has been freshly painted in Ermine White, and the vendor says: "The car has had a major overhaul and is in super condition". It comes with four extra Minilite wheels, Historic Identity documents. MSA logbook, Homologation forms, all history and build sheets for the engine. The car is featured on the front cover of 'RS The Faster Ford' and in 'Escort Performance' by Dennis Foy; Trofu has released a model of this car. It has been ratified as a faithful recreation of Roger Clark's car and signed on the inner wing by Stuart Turner and Mick Jones, respectively Clark's competitions manager and chief mechanic. Ready to go out and have fun!
