Few machines have attained classic status as quickly as Ducati's 916 and its smaller sibling the 748. The two models dominated their respective classes in production based racing from their introduction in the mid nineties until their replacement and became, and remain, objects of lust for sporting riders around the world with their unsurpassed looks and performance. The 748 was identical in most respects its larger brother except for a slightly smaller rear tyre profile and the obvious reduction in engine capacity.
The first series of machines was comprised of the basic 748 Biposto and the 748 SP, which was replaced in 1996 by the 748SPS. The range continued in this form until 2000 when it was subject to detail revisions. The base model, fitted with three spoke gold wheels became the 748E, at the other end of the range was the 748R, a homologation special built in very limited numbers, which featured Ohlins suspension and a tuned version of the SPS engine fitted with a slipper clutch and numerous titanium components. In the middle of the range was the 748S, which like the 748R used a version of the SPS engine, although in a slightly lower state of tune than that employed in 748R. Special 5 spoke Marchesini wheels were employed and the machine was fitted as standard with a single seat unit.
The lovely example offered has recorded only 8139 miles. Beautifully presented in the striking grey and white livery it is accompanied by the original Ohlins rear shock absorber, a new Hagon unit being fitted to the machine, two standard exhaust systems, a paddock stand and a dual seat. The motorcycle is fitted with a Termigonis exhaust system, various carbon fibre items and "lots of special items" including a red clutch cover and a 1098R carbon/alloy filler cap. The white paint and red lining were applied professionally to a very high standard. Described as being in excellent condition throughout it is reluctantly offered for sale due to the vendor having recently undergone a hip operation. It is MOT'd until the 1st June 2012 and is offered with a Swansea V5C.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
