Honda retired from Grand Prix road racing at the end of the 1967 and subsequently confined their on track activities to events and formulas that required the use of production derived machines such as Daytona. However in 1977 Honda introduced the MT125, a pure road racer built using a modified CR125 Elisnore moto cross engine, housed in a tubular frame. Honda UK then announced a series for the newly introduced machine, the MT125 Championship that prooved to be extremely popular. The success of the MT125 Championship seems to have inspired Honda to create a 250cc racer for use in a similar Japanese series for the 1978 season.
The 1978 RS250 was, in concept, similar to the MT125. It employed a contempoary CR250 two stroke, single cylinder motorcross engine and five speed gearbox modified for road racing use housed in a tubular steel frame. The machine was equipped with a low mounted expansion chamber and, interestingly utilised the recently introduced "comstar" wheels. It is thought that no more the one hundred of these interesting machines were built exclusively for the domestic series, however one was known to have been imported into the UK "in period". It is suggested that that machine was ridden by Neil Tuxworth, Charlie Williams and Joey Dunlop. This example was imported from Japan into the UK later in its its life. The vendor describes the matching numbers example as being in good condition in all respects and adds that all the parts and components are original. Resplendent in the red, white and blue Honda racing livery it is believed to be one of very few surviving examples of a barely know, but extremely significant chapter in the Honda road racing story.
