1963 Austin Mini Cooper S Rally Car

Lot details
Registration No: 363 GYP
Chassis No: CA257487121
Mot Expiry: March 2011

More than five million Minis were made between the car's launch in 1959 and the final Cooper rolling off the production line in 2000, making it the most popular British-made car ever. This masterpiece of packaging has never been bettered, accommodating four adults in a 10ft 1/4in long package by using 'a wheel at each corner' and turning the engine sideways with the transmission underneath. It wasn't long before racing car builder John Cooper realised the potential of the Mini - he used BMC engines in his Formula Junior cars - and in 1961 the Cooper was born, first in 997cc and then 998cc (from 1964) forms. A more powerful 1071cc 'S' version was developed in tandem, appearing in 1963, with 970cc and 1275cc versions for 1964. These nimble little cars soon became known for their giant-killing performances in competition, culminating in Monte Carlo Rally wins in 1964, '65 and '67. A timeless classic, the Mini in all its forms, but especially the Cooper, continues to appreciate in value. The 'S' that won the '64 Monte with Paddy Hopkirk and Henry Liddon was a 1071cc like this one, of which 4030 were built. The 1071 'S' engine is effectively a Formula Junior unit, with Nitrided crank, and gives only 5bhp less than the 1275, while thriving on revs.

This particular 1071 'S' has been extensively restored on the original bodyshell, using all genuine panels, and is presented as a recreation of the Monte Carlo winners. The vendor, describing the body and paintwork as "excellent", fills us in on the rest of the impressive spec: "Original 1071 Cooper 'S' possibly raced in the '60s and '70s, now in full rally trim with optional right-hand tank, Safety Devices rollcage, stiffened subframes and Moke sump guard plus battery box skid plate, Goodridge flexi hoses, all wiring and pipework inside the car, battery cut-off switch on the floor. There are two bonnets, one standard, one quick-release. Fully overhauled engine overbored +0.20in with 163 head, twin SU H4s and works exhaust system, Jack Knight straight-cut close-ratio three-synchro box. Inside, there are original style cloth-covered seats, (driver's bucket, navigator's recliner) with original brocade trim and rear seats. The Works-spec dash has Halda tripmeter and Heuer Master Time clocks, heated screen and full array of driver's and navigator's equipment, all parts either new old stock or refurbished. The cloth-covered bespoke wiring loom is a direct copy of an original Works loom made up and fitted by the owner of an original Works Cooper S. All new relays and other associated electrical parts are fitted. 'Works' speedometer with trip, Springalex steering wheel".

Other parts apparently include "spares bag and tow rope, tool roll, spare hub caps, extra Lucas 700 lights, grille muff, navigator's document bag on headliner and original 1965 Monte Carlo Rally plate". The vendor advises us that the car has covered under 500 miles since restoration, having been dry-stored since then, and comes with a Heritage Certificate and fresh MOT.
