In common with many of the other European nations Spain entered the 1950's with a growing economy and increasingly prosperous and aspirant population. As peoples aspirations increased they became more receptive to the concept of travelling further afield to work and consequently demand for economical transportation increased, that was met by an increasing number of manufacturers. Unfortunately for the small firms that had met with success in the 1950's producing lightweights to meet the demand for economical transport the 1960's heralded an era when the economical small car would become the vehicle of choice for many supplanting the lightweight motorcycle in the role and leading to the closure of many small motorcycle manufacturers. Villof was one such enterprise. The firm had originally commenced production during 1951 building machines fitted with Hispano Villiers two stroke engines. As the decade progressed they introduced power plants of their own design in 75cc and 125 cc capacities, however, by 1961 they had ceased production, falling victim to the increased prosperity that they had helped create.
The pretty example offered dates from 1955 and is clearly influenced by contemporary West German design. The engine, which is built in unit with the foot operated gearbox appears to have been inspired by the RT DKW and displaces 125cc. The cycle parts feature plunger rear suspension and telescopic forks and the wheels are equipped with full width hubs. It was restored by its then Spanish owner prior to it entering his private collection where it remained for a number of years before being purchased by an English collector in 2010. The machines vendor acquired it in 2013 and describes it as being in good condition throughout. Attractively presented in black with grey/blue tank panels it is a lovely example of a machine from one of Europe's less well known manufacturers.
