Herbert Austin founded the Austin Company in 1905 and the Seven, which started production in 1922, effectively made its fortune and was the car that brought the English middle class its first taste of scaled down motoring rather than scaled up motorcycling.
Draughtsman Stanley Edge, at the time an eighteen year old who perfected the new small Austin away from the Longbridge works at Herbert Austin's country home, was certainly influenced by Peugeot's Quadrilette. It was launched at £165 having an A-frame chassis, transverse-leaf front suspension, quarter-elliptics at the rear and a water-cooled 4-cylinder engine. Having brakes retarding all four wheels was a breakthrough however. The initial 696cc capacity was increased to 747cc from 1923 and, though constantly tweaked with electric starter added from 1924, coupled brakes from 1930 and 4-speed gearbox from 1933, Edge's basic design was produced in much the same form for 17 years.
One of the friendliest cars ever conceived and arguably forefather of mass motoring 'giants' such as the Volkswagen Beetle, Citroen 2CV and BMC Mini it was an extremely versatile design having a bewildering range of derivatives from Brooklands single seaters to two-speed tractors. Throughout a lifetime of continual revision and development, the 7 never lost its charm.
Starting life as a 1937 Austin Seven Ruby Saloon we are pleased to offer a delightful and extremely useable Austin Seven in a two-seater special sports guise. Designed and manufactured to accommodate a very tall driver this was completed in the 1990's to an extremely high standard and the first class bodywork is finished in the lovely unpainted and polished aluminium.
Although it is presented here without MOT or road fund licence we are sure that this is more down to general lack of use rather than any serious fault and it also comes with the very interesting cherished registration number.
