Lot details Registration No: YW 847 Chassis No: 73SC Mot Expiry: None
Launched by Rolls-Royce in 1925 to replace the Silver Ghost, which had been a worldwide success since 1906, the New Phantom, as it was initially known, was replaced by the 1929 Phantom II. The chassis was similar in design to that used for the Ghost, while the long stroke motor with 6-cylinders in two blocks of three and pushrod operated overhead valves resembled that which powered the 1922-introduced R-R 20hp, though at 7668cc capacity it had twice the swept volume.
Original logbooks record that this 1928-built PI chassis, bodied in period with limousine coachwork by Windovers of London, was registered there for five years to the first owner, one G Nayman, before becoming a Lancashire resident until the 1960s. We understand from the current owner that it was last used approximately fifteen years ago.
Current condition of the barn-found limo bodywork and light green over grey paintwork is described as being fair. Although the black leather in the front could do with some refurbishment, the chauffeur's compartment is still relatively good with instrumentation seemingly correct and intact. The employer's seats in beige cloth in the rear appear to in fair order, too, considering the little recent use, while many period fittings, such as wind-down division, two occasional seats and vanity bottles have survived and side and rear blinds still function. There are two spare wheels. When inspected recently, the 7.6-litre engine was found to be free and moved when in gear.
