After volunteering to paint a friend's Ferrari, Steve Cook, a keen sculpture, spent six weeks working on & studying the Italian Coachwork. He had always been passionate about the paint finish on high-end cars, as he had spent his childhood at hot rod & custom shows. By the time Steve had finished the job, his plan for "Red Ferrari" had emerged. Starting with a block of urethane, Steve then spent six whole months crafting & executing the GTO's sweeping lines & subtle details. The piece was generated entirely from raw materials & Steve supervised the pouring of the bronze. Working from photographs & Steve's memory of the car, the sculpture started to take place; its final form evolving from a `thousand subtle changes'. After years of experimentation with paint & many days of execution, Steve had reached his goal to produce a paint finish that mirrored those he had seen at the Hot rod shows many years earlier. Before the sculpture was completed, critics had said it was impossible to achieve this sort of a paint finish over bronze.
This lacquered bronze sculpture was purchased by the current vendor in c1990 for approximately £10,000 & has remained in his private collection to date. Signed & numbered to the base; 22 (plus two artist proofs) were scheduled to be cast, however it is thought that less than half were ever produced. This very imposing sculpture measures approximately 23 inches in length & is said to weigh 80 lbs. Supplied with a full page article on this sculpture from the November/December 1990 issue of `Vintage Motorsport', plus a three page letter from Steve Cook detailing the processes involved in creating this sculpture. Beautiful!
