The first SL, being an abbreviation of Sport Leicht, was largely engineered by the celebrated Daimler-Benz boffin, Rudi Uhlenhaut and was developed from one of the most enigmatic of all Mercedes models, the 1957 Gullwing.
Crossing the block here is a 1973 Stuttgart-built 350SL, which is claimed to be a fine example of this desirable classic. The specification of this roadster includes, in addition to the hood, a Mercedes factory supplied hardtop and alloys wheels. Also fitted are a Kenwood stereo and an immobiliser, and an original handbook is included. We understand that the hood fabric as well as the tyres have been renewed.
The current condition of the classically proportioned bodywork and blue paintwork is described as being good, and the cream interior fair. The 3499cc 8-cylinder motor, 4-speed automatic transmission and all the electrical equipment are reportedly in good order, whilst the 62,548 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for the auction is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage for the car from new.
PLEASE NOTE: We have since been informed by the owner that he does not believe the mileage to be correct from new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
