Lot details Registration No: LPA848K Chassis No: XAD2637355A Mot Expiry: Oct 2006
Introduced in 1969, the 1275 GT effectively replaced the 1275 Cooper S as performance flagship of the Mini range (though, the latter soldiered on until 1971). Based around the new Clubman monocoque bodyshell and equipped with Mini MK3 mechanical components, the model was powered by a four-cylinder 1275cc A-series OHV engine that developed some 59bhp and 67lbft of torque. Boasting a close-ratio four-speed manual gearbox, tachometer and servo-assisted front disc brakes as standard, it was reputedly capable of 90mph. Updated from mid-1971 with a redesigned fuel tank, 12-inch wheels, improved brakes and dry-cone suspension, the 1275 GT remained in production until 1980. Renowned during the 1960s for customising Cooper S Minis, the following decade saw coachbuilder Wood & Pickett turn its attention to the 1275 GT. Instantly recognisable thanks to their 'quad headlamp' encompassing front grilles and prominent wheelarch extensions, those cars passing through the London-based firm's workshops could be specified with a bewildering range of interior options encompassing electric windows, leather seats and sunroofs etc.
Finished in metallic blue with white composite upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "sound" (chassis), "fair / good" (bodywork, paintwork) or "good" (engine, gearbox, interior trim, wheels / tyres) condition. Apparently "purchased from Hooper & Co (coachbuilders) in 1979", 'LPA 848K' is said to have had its metal wheelarches replaced by Wood & Pickett supplied fibreglass ones some five years later and to have been treated to a new rear subframe during 1998. Reportedly containing "all its original instruments including an eight-track machine (not at present working)", it benefits from electric windows and a manual sunroof. Riding on alloy wheels, 'LPA 848K' is aptly summarised as an "economic fun car". Believed but not warranted to have covered 36,192 miles from new, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until October 12th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until June 30th 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
