During 1959 Yamaha introduced the sporting, twin cylinder, two stroke YDS1, derived from the YD2 and influenced by the firm's "works" YD racers. The new sports machine was claimed to produce 20 bhp from the twin carburrated engine, suffcient to propel the model to a claimed top speed of 85mph with the rider crouched behind the standard flyscreen. A duplex tubular frame, steering damper, flat handlebars and a tachometer enhanced the sporting appeal of the machine. However, for those seeking more performance a kit of parts were available to convert the machine into a YDS1R "Asama Racer" named after the famous volcanic ash circuit at Mount Asama , host to one of the most important domestic races where the machines raceed with knobbly tyres.
The kit comprised of a 6 gallon matt red fuel tank and complimentary seat, clip on handle bars, high compression cylinder heads and tuned alloy cylinders matched to special pistons, a set of expansion chambers and a magneto system. A pair of remote float chamber Mikuni carburettors and a revised tachometer/speedo bracket were also included whilst items such as rear-sets and a fairing or flyscreen were available seperately. With the kit fitted the machine was claimed to produce 30bhp and be capable of 100mph, however the standard suspension struggled to cope with the heavy machine which, when raceed in europe did not proove to be competitive.
This example formed part of the Ken Roberts collection, the first Englishman to race a Yamaha when he rode a YDS1R in the 1960 Singapore Grand Prix. It is described as being in good cosmetic condition , although the engine and transmission's condition is not known. The model was not officially imported into the UK and only two other examples of this significant model are known to be in the UK.
