The MGB was the best-selling MG of all time and during the course of its eighteen year production run, the model was subject to numerous refinements, improvements and (occasionally) controversial changes. Because the supply of spares and specialist advice has been maintained since then, any number of MGBs survive, many in excellent condition. Original-specification MGBs established a layout which evolved a lot in detail, but hardly at all in essence, and in the end more than 500,000 were produced, of which nearly 388,000 were open Roadsters, with more than 50,000 being delivered to British buyers. The sister car, the MGB GT, complete with a coupe style, and a hatchback, was also successful. All MGBs had 1798cc B-Series engines, nominally of 95bhp in UK-tune form, but the three-main-bearing crankshaft type was superseded by a five-bearing crankshaft from late 1964. Overdrive, an optional extra found on the majority of cars, was not standardised until 1975, an all-synchromesh gearbox was added from 1967, and (in a change not appreciated by every MG enthusiast) a modified body style, featuring large crash-absorbing polyurethane bumpers, was added from late 1974. Wheel styles changed persistently throughout this period, with centre-lock wire spoke wheels being optional.
Every MGB was manufactured with wind-up windows in the doors, the 'rubber bumper' change was a feature of 1974/1975, and from autumn 1976 all cars (including this machine) were equipped with a neatly re-styled fascia / instrument panel, with provision for a radio which most cars enjoyed. This particular Roadster was built and registered in 1977, and seemingly has the expected specification for that period, except that the overdrive which was standard by then is not present in the preserved car. The replacement engine is said to have been overhauled just 500 miles ago and we understand that new front disc brake callipers have also been fitted. In trim, and in bodywork / paintwork condition, it is claimed to be a "very good" example of this long-running sports car.
