Typifying the growing economic confidence of the mid 1950s, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was larger, faster and more boldly styled than its Silver Dawn predecessor. Introduced in 1955, there was nothing average about its 'Standard Steel Saloon' bodywork. A masterclass in formal elegance, it was underpinned by a new cruciform-braced box-section chassis equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a twin SU carburettor fed 4887cc straight-six engine allied to standard-fit four-speed automatic transmission, the Cloud could waft along at over 100mph. Once affectionately described as "a veritable country club on wheels", the model certainly boasted an inviting cabin. Trimmed with the finest hides, carpets and wood veneers, it promised relaxation and contentment.
Finished in silver over garnet with cream leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment and bodywork. Reportedly "part of a wedding-hire fleet which is being downsized due to ill health", 'VNP 777' is further understood to have spent some time in America and to have had its former silver over sand livery changed to the current one by a previous keeper. Fitted with a stainless steel exhaust last year and recently serviced in-house (the business employing its own mechanics), the Silver Cloud is said to "drive well with no serious problems". Though, the seller feels that its paintwork which is apparently thin in places could do with "some cosmetic care". An imposing motor car, this elegant Rolls-Royce is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2009.
