1933 had seen Panther enter into a mutually beneficial agreement with Pride and Clarke of Stockwell Road, London which led to the introduction of the Red Panther 250, followed in 1934 by a 350cc variant. These were built down to a price with one exhaust port, a simpler finish and three speed gearbox enabling Panther to market the Model 40 as a higher specification model with a twin port head and four speed gearbox. The 350 Panther became the Redwing 80 for 1934 together with the 250cc Redwing 70, the change of name further differentiating them from the lower specification Red Panther.
This example of the rare Redwing 80 was acquired by the vendor as a complete machine but a non runner. The engine turned over but was found to have badly worn main bearings when it was stripped down prompting their replacement as part of the complete engine rebuild. New exhaust pipes were made using the originals as patterns and the frame and tinware were blasted and refinished. New tyres, chains and wiring were fitted during the rebuild and an electronic ignition system was installed. A BSA M20 gearbox was stripped and rebuilt before being installed during the restoration. The restored machine is presented with a dating certificate from the Panther Owners Club, together with a Swansea V5C, an MOT valid until the 18th May 2012 and a current road fund licence.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
