Synonymous with the high-powered versions of the 'DB' 6-cylinder cars, Aston Martin re-introduced the Vantage name in February 1977. Tadek Marek's V8 engine, introduced with the DBS V8 in September 1969, had proved to be a reliable robust unit and was deemed to be quite capable of coping with a substantial increase in power. Modifications to the 5,340cc engine included revised camshafts, larger twin-choke Weber carburetors and inlet valves, new inlet manifolds and different plugs. The changes were claimed by the factory to provide 40 per cent more power and an increase in torque of 10 per cent, which resulted in a top speed of 170mph and 0 to 60mph in 5.3 seconds. In April 1978 Motor Sport magazine proclaimed the Vantage to be the fastest accelerating production car in the world. Various aerodynamic improvements included a spoiler on the tail, a front chin spoiler and blanked off radiator and bonnet air scoop. Meanwhile, Koni dampers and larger ventilated discs were fitted, the suspension was stiffened with a larger anti-roll bar and low profile Pirelli tyres were chosen.

The Series 3 Vantage was first shown at the Birmingham Motor Show in October 1986 and featured revised bodywork, 16 inch wheels and a claimed 400bhp. Production of the model ended in 1989, to be replaced by the Virage.

This late example was manufactured in 1988 and has had only three owners from new. Strikingly finished in Black with a black leather interior, we understand that it was repainted approximately 10 years ago and has also sensibly had its sills replaced. Said by the owner to be in very good all-round condition it features a sun roof, CD player and satellite navigation. Currently registered in Germany, from where it has been driven to the sale, it comes with substantial service history from Aston Martin Works Service and respected marque specialist, Ian Mason.
