Jaguar hatched their master plan to produce a ground-breaking sports car along the lines of their Le Mans winning D Type as a replacement for their hugely successful, though becoming rather dated XK120-150 line in 1956. The resultant E Type finally reached the showrooms in 1961 in coupe or roadster form, initially with 3.8, though soon with a 4.2-litre engine.
The entrant tells us that he acquired this 1969-built E Type Series 2 4.2 fixed head coupe in 2002 after it has been in receipt of a full and professional rebuild by a Jaguar restoration specialist. Photographs recording all stages of this refurbishment are available and can be inspected during viewing and on sale day. We understand from him that originally this was a US market car which was converted from lefthand drive to UK specification including a UK final drive and triple carburettors. The interior was largely renewed including steering wheel and switches.
Mileage since restoration has been low, we are told, though this did include a trouble-free trip to Le Mans in 2003. Current condition of bodyshell and dark blue paintwork are said to be excellent. The 4.2-litre 6-cylinder engine is reportedly in excellent order and the 4-speed manual transmission, having been rebuilt in 2002, very good. We understand that this fixed head has only come to market, reluctantly says the vendor, due to ill health.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
