The success acheived by the TD1 convinced Yamaha that the project was worth pursuing resulting in a developed version of the two fifty production racer becoming available during 1963. Although visually similar, the most obvious difference being the change to the "works" pattern TD1 expansion pipes detail changes were made to all aspects of the machine. The engine now employed a dedicated magneto cover instead of a modified YDS2 item as used by the TD1, single ring pistons were fitted and the transmission ratios were altered. The frame benefitted from some revised bracing to the steering head, tubular footrest hangers replaced the plates previously used and the swinging arm mountings were revised. New forks were adopted, as was a revised front mudguard.
The new model claimed 35bhp, up 4bhp on the TD1, whilst the overall weight remained much as the previous model resulting in sparkling performance, one lapped the 2 1/2 mile Daytona circuit at 128mph during practice. It is believed that sixteen examples of the first"run" were imported into the UK for the 1964 season with examples being purchased by Geoff Monty, Frank Sheene and Ted Broad among others.
This example formed part of the Ken Roberts collection and is described as being in "original" condition with good cycle parts. The condition of the electrical system, transmission and engine is not known, the machine having been in storage for a number of years and will require restoration before returning to the track. A new fuel tank is fitted aiding the restoration.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
