1958 Norton Dominator 99

Lot details
Registration No: VVU 509
Frame No: N14-78071
Engine No: N14-78071
cc: 598
MOT Expiry Date: May 2006

Powered by a new Hopwood designed 500cc twin-cylinder engine, the first Model E7 Dominator appeared at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. A capable machine, it was upstaged by the arrival of the Model 88 variant in late 1951. The first production bike to benefit from the company's race-proven 'Featherbed' frame, the younger Dominator's handling was a revelation. Further upgraded in 1955 with the addition of a welded subframe, fuller rear mudguard and lighter alloy hubs, the '88' was nonetheless falling behind the likes of the Triumph Tiger 110 and Royal Enfield Meteor in performance terms. To remedy the situation, Norton introduced the larger engined '99' in 1956. Capable of breaking the magic 'ton' thanks to its 31bhp, Daytona camshaft equipped 596cc (68x82mm) unit, it remained in production until 1962.
Finished in black with trademark silver / chrome tank, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good (engine) to excellent (frame, electrics, transmission, paintwork and cycle parts) condition. Reportedly in his ownership for "about six years" during which time it has been "restored regardless of cost with receipts in excess of £3,500", work has included rebuilt wheels (new chrome rims, polished stainless steel spokes), fresh tyres, overhauled brakes (new linings), refurbished forks (hard chromed stanchions / bushes) and replacement electrics (180W 12V alternator, Boyer Power Box / electronic ignition). Further benefiting from a "Basset Down balanced crank, new monobloc carburettor, new exhaust pipes / silencers, new Norvil primary belt drive and Commando clutch (one finger operation)" together with "all new bearings, chains and seals", it is said to be a "very smooth runner". Boasting new centre and prop stands its frame has been epoxy coated with other components being painted in two-pack, re-chromed or secured with stainless steel fasteners as appropriate. Reputedly a matching numbers machine that has been authenticated by the VMCC, it is offered for sale with "old green log book", MOT certificate valid until May 9th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until March 2006.
