1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud

Sold for £16,875

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: RWP 930
Chassis No: SBC50
Mot Expiry: May 2007

Typifying the growing economic confidence of the mid 1950s, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was larger, faster and more boldly styled than its Silver Dawn predecessor. Introduced in 1955, there was nothing average about its 'Standard Steel Saloon' bodywork. A masterclass in formal elegance, it was underpinned by a new cruciform-braced box-section chassis equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a twin SU carburettor fed 4887cc straight-six engine allied to standard-fit four-speed automatic transmission, the Cloud could waft along at over 100mph. Once affectionately described as "a veritable country club on wheels", the model certainly boasted an inviting cabin. Trimmed with the finest hides, carpets and wood veneers, it promised relaxation and contentment.
Finished in sage over velvet green with grey leather upholstery, this particular example is variously rated by the seller as being in "good" (paintwork, bodywork, interior trim) or "very good" (engine, automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis, wheels / tyres) condition. Said to have been delivered new on 13th September 1956 to Mr B. French of Kidderminster, chassis SBC50 remained in his possession for over twenty years prior to its purchase by G. Bruce McLaren of New York in April 1977. Migrating to America shortly thereafter, the Rolls-Royce next changed hands a decade later by which time its odometer reputedly showed a warranted 32,500 miles. Entering the current (fourth) ownership on 14th September 1993, the Cloud promptly undertook a 4,000 mile road trip between Washington D.C. and Santa Monica. Subsequently returned but not confined to the UK, chassis SBC50 has reportedly "participated in many RREC Euro Rallies and other European tours all covered in great style and without incident". Currently displaying under 75,000 miles on its odometer - a figure that to "the best of the vendor's knowledge and belief is true and correct" - this well travelled Cloud is offered for sale with history file (copy chassis cards, invoices / correspondence from Hofmann's of Henley and Priory Vintage Car Company etc), MOT certificate valid until 26th May 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until 31st May 2007.
