Lot details Registration No: SV 9232 Chassis No: 4139 Mot Expiry: Oct 2006
A descendant of the 1.5 litre ohv Type DB Talbot-Darracq introduced in 1921, the 1.7 litre ohv Type DD 12/40 Sports was equipped with leaf-sprung suspension (semi-elliptic front, cantilever rear), four-wheel Perrot-type drum brakes and a four-speed manual gearbox. Product of an engineering pool that included the likes of Louis Coatelen, Georges Roesch, Walter Becchia and Vincenzo Bertarione, it also boasted such niceties as a semi-floating back axle (complete with spiral bevel differential), detachable cylinder head and 12-volt electrics. Built at Suresnes near Paris by Automobiles Talbot (the French arm of the Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq triumvirate), the Type DD 12/40 was hailed by the contemporary motoring press as robust, reliable and sporty. Though, today survivors are increasingly scarce.
Finished in blue over black with black upholstery, this particular example is reputed to have "spent most of its life in France until being imported from Blois in 1999". Purchased by the present owner the following year, it has since been treated to a respray, re-wire, re-trim (save for its front seat base) and most recently an engine overhaul (new white metal bearings, pistons, valves, valve guides etc). Retaining such period features as an 'A. Dupre & C. Perrin, Paris' hinged windscreen frame, Marchal headlamps and Boyce Moto-Meter, it is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition. Said to be capable of cruising at 50mph, SV 9232 has "successfully rallied in France" during both 2002 and 2003/4. A handsome usable Vintage tourer, it is offered for sale with history file, MOT certificate valid until 17th October 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until 31st May 2006.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WAS DRIVEN SOME 200 MILES TO THE SALE (A JOURNEY THAT IT COMPLETED IN AN IMPRESSIVE FIVE HOURS). THE VENDOR REPORTS THAT HE RICHENED THE CARBURETTOR MIXTURE TO COMBAT ICING EN ROUTE AND THAT THE TALBOT LOST A LITTLE WATER VIA THE RADIATOR SEAL BUT OTHERWISE BEHAVED IMPECCABLY.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
