Lot details Registration No: KJD248W Chassis No: 1070462000469 Mot Expiry: April 2007
Launched in 1971, the R107-series SL was beautifully engineered. Notably rigid for a convertible, its two-door monocoque was equipped with all-round independent suspension, power-assisted steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press for its performance and refinement, the 500SL, flagship of the UK range, was unveiled in May 1980. Powered by a 4973cc (240bhp, 299lbft of torque) V8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox, it was reputedly capable of 140mph and 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. In production for nine years, the model's fearsome price tag (it cost some £41,700 by 1989) ensured that only 11,817 were despatched worldwide.
Finished in Diamond Blue with blue tex upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Riding on alloy wheels, it is said to benefit from "hard- / soft-top roofs, cruise control and a wind stop". A stylish companion come rain or shine, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2007 and road tax until March 31st 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
