A riposte to the diminutive BMC Spridget duo, the Triumph Spitfire was launched in 1962. Based around a truncated Herald chassis, it was equipped with all-round independent suspension (double wishbone front / swing-axle rear), disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering. Styled by Michelotti, its wonderfully sleek two-door roadster bodyshell featured a clam-shell bonnet and decent boot. Evolved through five guises over the course of its eighteen-year production run, the MK3 variant arrived in January 1967. Fitted with an enlarged 1296cc OHV four-cylinder engine, it proved the fastest Spitfire yet. Visually distinguished by its unusual bridle-esque front bumper / grille arrangement (a sop to US safety legislation), the newcomer also sported a wooden instrument panel and one-piece convertible hood.
Finished in Valencia Blue with light tan upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. In the current ownership since 1987, it has reportedly "only covered approximately 5,000 miles" since being treated to "a 'ground up' restoration, including a full engine rebuild, that was completed in 1995 (receipts will be supplied)". Apparently garaged when not in use, we are further informed that "the only known modifications to original 'spec' are the installation of a Spitfire MKIV gearbox with 'J' type overdrive, 'inertia' reel seatbelts and a stainless steel exhaust system". Believed but not warranted to have covered 84,400 miles from new, it is hoped that this well cared for Spitfire will have obtained a new MOT certificate by the time of sale (though, as with all vehicles in this auction prospective purchasers are asked to make their own paperwork checks via the Document Office).
PLEASE NOTE: This car now has an MOT until March 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
