Scott motorcycles recommenced production after the Second World War during 1946. The post war Flying Squirrel continued in much the same form as it had prior to the outbreak of war. The twin cylinder liquid cooled two stroke engine drove a three speed gearbox via a central primary chain and was housed in a rigid duplex frame equipped with Webb girder forks, although these were quickly replaced by Dowty air sprung telescopic forks. The change in the forks marked the only significant improvement to the machine to be carried out until 1949 when the ignition system was changed from a magneto to a coil system. Unfortunately by 1950, Scott motorcycles were expensive, with a price far in excess of the rival twins on offer from the likes of Triumph and BSA, furthermore, the engines performance had not significantly altered from the vintage period due to a lack of development at the works, whilst the motorcycles had got heavier resulting in a decline in overall performance when compared to their rivals. However, Scott were fortunate in having a band of loyal followers who would not consider any other motorcycle, which meant that when the Saltaire factory closed at the end of 1950 there was enough demand to warrant the continued limited production of machines by the Aerco jig and Tool Company owned by long time Scott enthusiast Matt Holder. These were initially 1951 season machines that had been acquired following the closure of Saltaire, although eventually new motorcycles with pivoted fork frames would become available with production continuing in a limited manner for the next decade.
The Squirrel offered, dating from 1947 was restored to concours condition in 1984 and was purchased by the vendor at a Sotheby's auction in April 1989. It is described as being in good condition mechanically and cosmetically, although in need of a polish and is offered without a registration document.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
