The landmark 300 of 1954 and the ensuing 190 comprised the first generation of Mercedes-Benz's iconic SL range, since when the company's sizeable line-up of prestige motorcars has never been without such a sportscar on offer. Of differing personality, each generation has earned its place in automotive history. The fourth family of SLs (the R129 Series) was launched at the Geneva Motor Show of 1989 and was based on a shortened version of the W124 floorpan. It was a beautifully-engineered car that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features. The specification included independent suspension all round (double wishbone at the front/contemporary five link system at the rear), adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, a hidden roll-over bar that automatically extended when required, and front air bags. The specification was comprehensive and included electrically powered windows, mirrors, seats and convertible top.
This attractive-looking right-hand drive 300SL features Pale Metallic Blue bodywork, a colour-keyed factory hardtop, Dark Blue hood and Beige interior trim. It has been in regular use since being acquired by the vendor, who considers the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, six-cylinder engine and automatic gearbox to all be in "good" order. The odometer currently reads an unwarranted 140,149 miles and 'H501 AME' is MOT'd into April 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
