Lot details Registration No: C285MWB Chassis No: WDB1070472A047906 Mot Expiry: June 2013
The third generation SL (R107) was launched in 1971. The newcomer featured a two-door monocoque bodyshell with independent suspension all round, while the power-assisted steering was Daimler-Benz's own recirculating ball system. Braking was by discs all round - ventilated on the front. Over its very successful 19 year production span - the longest run of any Mercedes chassis - the R107 featured no less than two straight-six engines and six V8 units. The 420SL variant is understood to be the rarest of all the 237,287 R107 SLs made, with just 2,148 leaving the factory between 1985 and 1989. Its 4.2-litre V8 produced some 215bhp at 5,200 rpm - sufficient output to endow the big Benz with effortless acceleration and a top speed of 130mph. Properly serviced, R107 SLs just run and run.
This right-hand drive Blue-coloured 1986 420SL features contrasting Cream leather upholstery. Garaged when not in use, it has served as a weekend car for the last 12 years and recently been treated to an overhaul of the electrical system. The vendor currently considers `C285 MWB' to have "good" bodywork, paintwork, V8 engine and automatic gearbox, and "average for age" interior trim. The unwarranted mileage stands at 154,461 and the Mercedes comes complete with factory supplied hard and soft tops and an MOT into June 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
