The ‘Pagoda’ SLs are among the most enduring of collectors’ classics, thanks to the combination of timeless styling and unquestionable build quality. The exceedingly handsome lefthand drive example now offered has benefited from spending the majority of its life in the dry climate of sunny California, and records show it was in the same ownership from 1996 until imported to the UK in 2014, in running but scruffy condition following a period of dry storage. It is apparent that a significant degree of recommissioning has recently taken place. The work has included: the replacement of sills, floor sections and lower wings, and the whole car being treated to an engine out, bare metal respray in Silver. The Black interior benefits from new carpets, seat covers and door trims, and the Mercedes comes complete with new mohair hood and colour-matched hardtop. Thirty miles of testing have revealed a few remaining issues including jumping out of forth gear on overrun, but the car’s potential is self-evident.
