Launched at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show, the Jaguar XK120 Roadster caused a sensation. Penned by Sir William Lyons, the model's sensuous lines seemed almost impossibly glamorous to a country still feeling the effects of rationing. While the 120mph top speed that its name signified soon became the stuff of legend. Flooded with orders, Jaguar began limited hand-built production soon thereafter (although, it was not until 1950 that the factory was sufficient 'tooled-up' to discard aluminium in favour of steel for the curvaceous bodywork). Credited with 160bhp and 190lbft of torque in standard tune, its legendary 3442cc DOHC straight-six engine was allied to a four-speed manual transmission.
This left-hand drive Roadster was manufactured in 1952 and distributed by Max Hoffman in New York. Returning to UK shores around 2015 and first registered in September 2015, the car is thought to have spent the rest of its life residing in America. Finished in Green with Tan interior, and Beige hood the XK120 was entrusted by its previous American owner, who was the custodian of the car for over 30 years, to Sargent Metalworks of Bradford VT, the winners of 'Best in Show' at the 2003 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with a 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC, and since have built up an amazing portfolio of past restoration work which includes numerous Bugattis and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. ‘IG 4253’ received a 'multi-year, frame-off restoration' by Sargent Metalworks which was completed circa 2015 before its importation. Fitted with an uprated fast road or vintage rallying usage, which includes a tuned engine incorporating a C-Type cylinder head, louvered bonnet, Le Mans-style fuel filler cap, and Moto Lita steering wheel to name a few, with thoughts of use in the Mille Miglia Storica.
The Jaguar is accompanied by a sizeable history file including a V5C, Vehicle Information Record from Jaguar 1991, a large quantity of invoices from prior and during the restoration, numerous photographs of the restoration work, Service Manual, Spare Parts Catalogue and Operating, Maintenance & Service Handbook.
