Launched in 1963, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT was one of the decade's prettiest and most influential coupe designs. Styled by Bertone, its supremely elegant two-door bodyshell was based on the Milanese manufacturer's highly regarded 105-series platform. Equipped with all round coil-sprung suspension, sharp brakes and well weighted steering, it handled with typical brio and panache. Introduced for the 1966 model year, the GT 1300 Junior version was powered by a 1290cc `twin-cam' four-cylinder engine allied to five-speed manual transmission. Weighing in at just 930kg and with some 90bhp on tap, the compact 2+2 seater was capable of over 100mph. Prohibitively expensive in the UK where import duty saw it vying with larger, more powerful machines, the Alfa Romeo proved a strong seller in its native Italy. Unveiled in 1968, the 1300 GTA version was a homologation special (the 'A' in its name being short for 'Alleggerita' meaning 'Lightened'). Boasting lightweight seats, plastic rear side windows, Campagnolo wheels, various magnesium castings and aluminium alloy body panels etc, the 1300 GTA employed a smaller version of its 1600 GTA sibling's mighty `twin-plug' motor. Available in either `Stradale' or `Corsa' guise, just 447 1300 GTAs were made.
Starting life as a left-hand drive GT 1300 Junior, `EHJ 357H' has since been modified to resemble a 1300 GTA. Reportedly "imported from Italy in 2004", the Alfa Romeo is further understood to have been "extensively restored to a very high standard". Riding on GTA-style wheels, it also sports a new interior (complete with GTA-style steering wheel), aluminium doors and GTA-style door handles. Finished in red with red upholstery, the coupe is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Said to have "just completed a 300-mile trip with no problems", this gorgeous `step-front' 1300 GTA look-alike is accompanied by "bills and invoices totalling thousands of pounds" and MOT certificate valid until March 2010.
